James Liggat

Casting Director

James Liggat was born in 1920 in Suffolk, England. He was a casting director and actor, known for A Clockwork Orange (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975) and The Shining (1980).

Casting director, James Liggat, worked on all but 2 of Hammer’s Journey to the Unknown (1968) television series. Before moving on to casting, his early career began as an actor in 5 films, starting with Castle Sinister in (1948).

He was previously married to actress Lorraine Clewes, and his daughter, Susie, is a film producer.

He died on 5th June 2005 in London, England, UK.

His first film for Hammer was Ten Seconds to Hell (1959), where he worked in Berlin for 5 months. He continued working as an assistant until the mid sixties when he graduated to a fully fledged editor on Dracula, Prince of Darkness (1966), although his work continued to be supervised by Hammer’s editor-in-chief, James Needs. Of his working relationship with Needs, Chris recalled, “Jim Needs truly did supervise, but in a very pleasant way. He’d keep an eye on the rushes, so he knew what there was, to make sure it would basically work in his mind, and then just left me alone to construct it.”

James died on June 5, 2009 in London.
